What is Your Baby's Temperament?

Whenever a new mom or mom-to-be asks for my book recommendations I always recommend both Babywise and The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems . Baby Whisperer goes along with Babywise wonderfully and I pull from both books when creating my children's daily routines. Something I love about The Baby Whisperer (Tracey Hogg) is that her book goes into a lot  of detail. My sister-in-law actually is more of a "Baby Whisperer" parent than a "Babywise" one. I lean more towards Babywise with most of my parenting, but draw a lot  from The Baby Whisperer as well. One concept I really appreciate from The Baby Whisperer is about temperaments. Knowing and understanding your baby's temperament helps when parenting them. Different personalities require different approaches when it comes to parenting. I believe firmly in parenting my children equally, but how one child responds to a certain method may differ from the way their sibling responds to the same met...

Baby Food: Some Complicated Junk

"There are a lot of breast-feeding consultants out there, but what I need now is a solid food consultant." I read that quote and couldn't help but to TOTALLY agree!!! I left Kye's dr. appt on Wenesday feeling like Kye was ready for solids but still not too sure how to go about it. Like I mentioned, Stephanie said that cereal is up to me, to start with veges, to give him the same vege for 5 days then introduce the next one, to feed him 1/2 a jar twice a day, to start him on diluted juice, and to mix juice with his cereal. Okay. She did NOT tell me which vege to start with, what kind of cereal to buy, and what kind of juice to buy. I got to Publix and felt VERY overwhelmed when I looked at ALL the millions of options. This lady who worked there could tell I was confused so she started offering up her advice and I basically tried to ignore her because she said she gave her kid cereal when he was 1 month old and just did everything she wanted no matter what her dr sai...

Baby's Temperament

As I mentioned before, I have really enjoyed the book The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems. This is my second of three posts I plan on doing that cover my favorite topics in the book. This one is all about temperament! I found it interesting that Hogg talks about baby's emotional lives and how our emotional makeup, for the most part, is predetermined through genes and brain chemistry . She defines temperament as: the raw material that babies possess when they come into the world, also referred to as personality, nature or disposition. She says it affects how they eat, sleep, and react to the world around them. Here are the five different temperaments she discusses: 1. Angel: This is the personality we all hope our babies have! It's a dream child who easily adapts to their environment and to whatever changes you throw at them. This baby rarely cries and when they do it's easy to tell why they are crying. They are very easygoing and even-tempered. If...

The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems: Naps

It's no secret that for quite awhile I had some major issues with Kye's naps. I have followed Babywise for majority of Kye's life but yet I still had nap problems. Babywise discusses something they refer to as "the 45 minute intruder" which is when the baby will sleep awesome the first half of the nap and then wake up 45 minutes into it and have a difficult time going back to sleep. What's happening is the babys sleep cycle hits a transition phase at about 45 min when they are moving from lighter to a deeper sleep and many babies are very sensitive during that time and can be easily waken. Kye was, and actually still is, this baby! Babywise is well known for the CIO (cry it out) method. It's recommended to let the baby cry themselves back to sleep as this will teach them not to rely on their parents or a sleep prop in order to sleep. While I follow EVERY other guideline BW suggests, I do not do cry it out. I felt like when he had GERD (or did he ever...
