Car seat safety is super important. We all know this. This means no wearing big winter coats while strapped into a car seat. That makes sense from a safety standpoint. But as someone who has lived in chilly climates I also know that, well, babies get cold ! Ideally we could all warm up our cars and then load our babies, never exposing them to the chill. But that isn't always feasible. I for one spent last winter living in a home with an outside parking place around the corner from where we lived. I had to get a two and half year old and newborn twins out to the car by myself in freezing weather. Even if you do have a warm garage to load up in once you are out you can't just leave your kids in the store while you go warm up the car. So you need to be able to keep kids warm in a cold car. Car seats are vital to keeping our children safe in the car. The tough things is that things are constantly changing...including our kids! Even people who strive to be "on top of" all things car seat safety can miss something along the way. It's important to be vigilant in keeping our children safe while riding in the car...from birth till adulthood let's do all we can to protect them! Awhile back I wrote this post on car seat safety. Today I want to discuss what happens after the age of 2. By now everyone knows, I hope, that children are to be left rear facing in their car seats until age 2. What you may not know is that it's actually best to keep your child rear-facing as long as possible. It's safer. Period. The ability to rear-face for an extended period of time comes down to having the right car seat. The world of car seats is SO overwhelming and the sad reality is that all seats are not created equal. When my babies are infants I use an infant carrier type seat (I love the Chicco Keyfit 30 ). Once my babies reach the height or weight limit for that seat I then invest in a convertible car seat. Not only are all car seats different, but car seat companies are constantly tweaking things and coming out with new models. I wrote this as a guest post awhile back on the babywise blog . I thought now would be a good time to share it with my readers as the holidays bring a time of travel for so many of us and it's essential to always be mindful of car seat safety! Also if you haven't heard about the new latch car seat rules be sure to check them out here ! For me, car seat safety is a no-brainer. Britt has been in her "big kid" car seat for awhile now and we still really like it! You can read my review of her seat HERE ! At just a few days over 14 months old my little SMARTY PANTS figured out how to somehow unbuckle herself in the car seat. I seriously can't believe she can do it! I checked everything out and it wasn't because it was too lose or not fully buckled or that the straps needed to have a setting changed or anything. It wasn't due to error from the car seat or from the way we strapped her into it. She is just CLEVER and STRONG! She figured out how to push and squeeze the buckle and pull it out! I hoped it was like a one time thing but I was wrong. I found her unbuckled a few times in a row and knew something had to be done. I personally believe in correcting my children ( yes, we spank! ). Usually my plan of action would to be to spank her for undoing the car seat in order to train her not to do it. However, she sits backwards in the s...

It's been a little busy around here but I'm thankful for these monthly posts as it gives me a place to put the little moments that I could easily forget with time. Here's what Kye was up to during his 20th month of life (from Oct 4th- Nov 4th): Words: His vocabulary is just growing and growing. It's hard to imagine I was ever nervous about his lack of talking! In addition to all the words last month , he's now also saying: doggie out , mama (for both Gramma and G-Mama), animal sounds (bah for sheep and goat, snorts for pig, moo for cow, neigh for horse, bark for dog, meow for cat, who-ha for monkey, roar for lion and tiger, here's a video of some), marvin (from his favorite book), glasses , book , cool (here's a video ), big , slippers , Colt , Payton , reading ("re-re"), sit down (always points to the seat, it's a demand for sure!), seat , church , cake , tv ("see-see" which means he wants to watch his YBCR movie and here...
