Guide to Weaning from the Pacifier

Friday, September 4, 2015

I've had three babies and experienced different attachment items with each of them. Kye was my first and he used a paci. And my experience with the pacifier with him made me more mindful about pacifier use for future babies. Both of my girls also "used a pacifier" but it was never an attachment item for them and we never had to deal with "weaning" from it.  This is a simple guide I created from my own personal experiences to help wean from the pacifier: How to Avoid Making the Pacifier a Sleep Prop A pacifier can be a wonderful tool to help in sleep training your baby. However, it can also can easily become a sleep-prop, which will disrupt your baby’s ability to self-soothe to sleep. The best way to use a pacifier for an infant while avoiding it becoming a sleep prop is to limit it’s use to the crib only. It is also best to only use it when the baby wakes early from naps or night sleep and needs help to fall back to sleep. You want to let your b...

Dealing With The 4 Month Sleep Regression

4 Month Sleep Regression. Yes, it's a thing. I never knew it was a thing though until my third  baby. Just goes to show that old dogs can learn new tricks, huh?  I LOVE the Wonder Weeks App and have found it to be extremely accurate. Babies go through times of developmental leaps and during those times often have sleep issues. It makes a lot of sense: as they develop they are more and more aware of their surroundings which makes it more difficult for them to self soothe when they wake early or difficult for them to fall asleep when they are first put down.  I'm a member of several Babywise Facebook Groups (my personal favorite is "I Love Babywise" if you're looking for a good one!) and kept reading about this mysterious "4 month sleep regression." It is a month long  wonder "week." I shrugged it off. Tess was doing so well with sleep so surely it wouldn't affect me. Not my kid... Turns out not only did Tess struggle with the ...

Babywise and the Pacifier

Saturday, March 2, 2013

This is a guest post I wrote awhile back for a fellow Babywise Mom's blog :) Since today is Kye's BIG party I figured it was a good day to share it here :) When my son was about three weeks old I had a friend recommend reading Babywise. I loved the entire book and started putting the method into practice right away. With one exception: the pacifier. By the time I had read the book my son was already a "paci baby." Babywise encourages use of a pacifier at times when a baby is fussy but not hungry. However, it warns of allowing the pacifier to become a sleep prop. And, for us, a sleep prop is exactly  what the pacifier had become! My son "needed" the pacifier to sleep. He was swaddled and, therefore, I spent a TON of time in and out of his room re-inserting the pacifier every time it fell out. Over and over again I'd be in his room popping it back in. I had such a distain for the pacifier and swore I'd never use one again!  ...

Week Two Summary

I promise these posts will start to get a better order to them eventually, blogger has been funky lately with picture uploads for me so I have to post them in the order that they were taken! Here's what Brittlynn was up to during her second week of life: Nursing: Babywise says if you focus on full feedings from birth that your baby will fall into a natural routine by about day 10. This happened sooner for us with Brittlynn, she was in a natural schedule of eating 2 1/2-3 hours during the day and going 4 hours at night. Regardless on the length of the feeding, she tended to eat four times on the breast. Two from one side, then two times from the other side. Usually feedings were lasting an hour or more. Since she took SO long to eat, her awake times were only 5-10 min long each. She is a very sleepy nurser...so frustrating! I try everything to keep her awake but typically the only thing that works is to change her diaper mid-feeding (which she usually needs it anyway!). Sometim...
