Something I am very passionate about is SIDS prevention. I've seen how sudden infant death syndrome affects a family. I've witnessed that pain and hurt and I don't want ANY family to have to experience that, especially my own. With Kye, I wasn't as on top of things as I should have been but with Britt (and all future babies) I am taking it very seriously. We do all the things possible to prevent SIDS: back to sleep, fan on in room, keep the temp at 70 degrees (we have a thermometer in her room so we can always keep track of the temp!), use the angel care monitor, no bumpers, nothing in the crib at all. Even though we do all of those things, it doesn't mean that Brittlynn is 100% risk free of sudden infant death syndrome. The whole thing about SIDS is that they aren't really sure what causes it. ...
When you have a new baby you go to the hospital about two days after you get home to have them checked and then about two weeks later you take them to the pediatrician to be checked. With Brittlynn, we ended up going when she was 8 days old. We had an appointment set for when she was two weeks, but I called up there to ask about her tongue (post to come on ALL of that story) and they wanted to go ahead and see her. They said if she checked out fine then they'd go ahead and count it as her well visit too. Sounded great to me, but the only downside was that Zach had a group he had to work. It was one that he had rescheduled when she was born and the last thing you want to do is reschedule on someone twice . Kye had school (Mrs. Charlotte picked him up for me) and Mom was able to come with us! It worked out well and Zach will for sure be there at her next appointment! Zach and I both took a CPR class for a semester in college (It was the CRAZIEST class...Zach and I were both in it along with his high school sweetheart who he dated for like 2 years, a girl he randomly semi-dated for awhile, and the girl he broke up with to get with me. What are the odds?!?) but also took the infant cpr class at the hospital when we were pregnant with Kye. We felt that we could def use a refresher then since being parents put it all in a new perspective ya know? Here's my post from that course! This time around we decided the Infant CPR course was essential. When I babysat Titus and witnessed what we think may have been his first seizure I did not know he was having a seizure and started to do CPR steps on him. The FIRST thing I did was the finger sweep method. I hate that we are so off on Kye's appointments! This Wednesday Kye had his 4 month check-up, even though he's more like 4 1/2 months. His 6 month check-up he'll be a week shy of 7 months! They assured me that we will get back on track at his 9 month check-up though which is good! I try hard to handle things that come up with Kye on my own by using the internet, friends, or books. I'm not one of those "omg call the dr." type people. That being said, when I AM going to go to the dr. I come up with several questions to ask because I want to make sure I'm doing things as they would have me do them! Why do we bother dressing Kye up all cute for the visits? He always ends up being naked anyway! Here he is with Daddy waiting for Stephanie to come in! This time the appointment fell at the end of his nap and during his feeding time so we had to feed him a bottle while we were waiting. It worked out well though because he was in a great mood for the doctor! ...
Week Change Ok , so I'm an idiot. But I also think this whole age thing is confusing as crap! When we are born we are in our 1st year but then we turn 1 year old and when we are 1 year old we're actually into our 2 nd year! It works the same way with weeks. Kye's first week he was actually 0, his second week he was 1 week old, etc. This whole time I've been doing it wrong. Since he turns 12 weeks old today this whole past week has actually been his 12 th week, not his 11 th ! Confusing? Yes! But I'm going to go back and correct all the weeks that I've written about :) Now, onto this past week...which is when Kye was 11 weeks old but was living his 12 th week of life! haha SIDS We've been battling it out with the naps and thought he may be ready to be done with the swaddle so I tried laying him down in a sleeper and when Zach checked on him he thought he was cold so he put a blanket on him. We are officially experts on all things baby and parenting! haha...well at least we should be after the completion of allll these classes we've taken! After a long drive back from Gatlinburg (Zach keeps saying we went to North Carolina...random) we had to get ready and go to the TLC class the same night! I was one of the only two pregnant women who attended the class. Our largest class was the epidural one and the smallest was the one on actually caring for the baby! Kinda ironic! While we didn't enjoy the postpartum class so much this one was MUCH more beneficial and I'm glad it was the last class as it covered more of the fun aspects of parenting instead of so much gross-ness. Things we learned in this class included: The bulb syringe needs to be pushed in before placing it in the baby's cheeks and nose then release it to get the gunk out.
